Brought in my grandfather's automatic — an old piece with sentimental value that had stopped running years ago. Kraisorn assessed it thoroughly and explained what he found without making me feel rushed into anything. The restoration took about six weeks in total, which he had told me upfront. When I collected it, everything was documented and I got back the mainspring that had been replaced. Well worth the time and the cost.

My daily Seiko automatic had lost its self-winding over about a year — I kept winding it manually and didn't think much of it. A colleague recommended Horolume and I brought it in. They diagnosed a worn rotor bearing, showed me before touching anything, and had it back within two weeks running properly. The service note they provided was genuinely detailed. I had not encountered that level of paperwork from a watchmaker before.

I visited from Chiang Mai specifically to use Horolume for a dial refresh on a watch I've had since my twenties. The lume on two of the hour markers had discoloured differently from the rest and it had been bothering me. They assessed it carefully and were upfront that a full re-lume would change the patina — they recommended leaving it, which I appreciated. The cleaning and realignment they did do made a visible difference. Losing one star only because the wait was slightly longer than estimated, but they called to let me know.

I have tried three different watch repair places in Bangkok over the years and Horolume is in a different category. The difference is the conversation. They actually explain things. When they found a hairline crack in the cannon pinion during my father's estate restoration, they photographed it and called me to talk through the options before ordering a replacement. That kind of consideration is rare.

I was in Bangkok for work and my automatic had been running fast for several months. I found Horolume through a recommendation in an online forum. Walked in without an appointment, they had a look the same day and explained what was likely causing it. I had a short time in the city so we agreed I'd leave it and collect before my flight. They finished on schedule, provided a written note, and the watch has been accurate since. I would go back without hesitation if I were in Bangkok again.

The dial refresh on my mother's old watch came out beautifully — the hands sit straight again and the dial looks clean without being stripped of character. Pricing was transparent and the total came to exactly what was quoted. My only minor observation is that communication during the service could have been a bit more frequent. But the quality of the work is hard to argue with.

In Detail

Three Pieces, Three Journeys

Case Study 01 · Estate Restoration

The Situation

A 1960s Swiss automatic, inherited from an uncle, had been stored in a drawer for over twenty years. The crown was stiff, the movement was not running, and the dial had developed some foxing near the twelve o'clock marker.

The Work

Full strip-down revealed dried lubricant throughout and a bent hand. Movement cleaned, parts assessed individually. A replacement hand was sourced from a specialist supplier in Germany — the owner was shown the match before fitting. Dial foxing was documented but not treated to preserve originality.

The Outcome

Watch returned running and winding correctly. Full written stage record provided. All removed parts returned in labelled envelope. Timeline: 7 weeks from drop-off to collection.

"I had not expected to wear it again. Now I do."

Case Study 02 · Automatic Winding Service

The Situation

A daily-wear automatic from a well-known Japanese maker had progressively stopped holding its power reserve over about eighteen months. The owner had adjusted to winding it by hand each morning without investigating further.

The Work

Rotor bearing had worn to the point of slipping rather than winding. Movement cleaned and lubricated, rotor replaced with a compatible part agreed with the client. Post-service function check confirmed the reserve held correctly over 48 hours.

The Outcome

Full winding function restored. Watch now runs continuously through a working day without manual intervention. Function note issued. Timeline: 10 working days.

"It just works properly again. That's all I needed."

Case Study 03 · Hand & Dial Refresh

The Situation

A vintage dress watch with a cream dial had developed uneven lume across the hour markers — some had gone grey while others retained their original warm tone. The minute hand had also shifted very slightly off-centre over years of use.

The Work

Lume variation documented photographically and shared with the client before any decision. Owner chose to leave the lume as-is to preserve the patina — only cleaning and hand realignment were carried out. Dial surface cleaned with appropriate materials that preserved the aged cream tone.

The Outcome

Legibility improved. Hand centred correctly. Dial character preserved. Client noted the improved readability while retaining the watch's aged character. Timeline: 7 working days.

"The advice not to over-restore it was exactly what I needed to hear."
